Turkey Opens Embassy in Kigali

Turkey has sent its foreign affairs minister to officially open their embassy in the Rwanda’s capital Kigali.

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu the minister of foreign affairs of Turkey arrived today for a one day visit, raised the Turkish flag at the embassy located at Kimihurura sector in Gasabo disitrict.

Rwandans have been going to Kampala to obtain travel visas before travelling to Turkey. However, the multimillion magnificent building in Kigali will host all embassy services.

Mevlüt emphasized that although there was an established relationship between his country and Rwanda, the agreements made will contribute a lot to both countries.

“Various agreements signed to develop political, economic and cultural relations in Rwanda are a big step made and we look forward to establish more businesses here,” he said.

Rwanda’s Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo congratulated Turkey upon the step made and promised good bilateral trade.

“We are going to put more effort in our trade not forgetting our coffee which will be often exported in Turkey,” She said.

She said that besides the normal trade between the two countries, Turkey is soon going to invest in Rwanda’s cloths industries, electricity and infrastructures.

Rwanda-Turkey agreements are expected to strengthen economic ties between the two countries through trade promotion, co-ordination, as well as information, skills and knowledge sharing.

The establishment of Turkey Embassy has come after the Turkish Airlines has been operating in Rwanda since 2012. In 2013, it when Rwanda opened its embassy in Turkey in a bid to boost its bilateral and economic ties.

Rwanda’s exports to Turkey have increased to over $8.5 million on annual basis, but the country’s imports more than double this figure.

Rwanda imports about $21 million worth of commodities from turkey. Therefore, the new platform could help bridge the trade gap between the two countries.
